KNOW YOUR CATCH

How to find and
recognize this fish.

Olive-green sides with a dark horizontal stripe and a mouth that extends beyond the rear edge of the eye.

BEST BET FROM THE CABIN

Work a green-pumpkin Ned rig, weightless worm, or small paddletail slowly beside docks, wood, and vegetation.

01 Where it lives +

Dock shade, submerged wood, weed edges, and other cover where bass can wait to ambush prey.

02 When to fish +

Fishing improves as the lake warms in spring and peaks around the spawn. In summer, concentrate on dawn and dusk.

03 What it eats +

Adults eat fish, crayfish, frogs, and other available prey. Young bass focus on crustaceans, insects, and small fish.

04 How it behaves +

An ambush predator that uses vegetation and structure as cover. Males build and guard shallow spring nests.

05 Handle with care +

Support larger fish with a second hand under the belly; never hang a heavy bass at an extreme jaw angle.
