KNOW YOUR CATCH

How to find and
recognize this fish.

Golden-brown flanks with black and often reddish spots, a pale belly, and fewer spots on the tail than a rainbow trout.

BEST BET FROM THE CABIN

Use a small copper spoon, dark inline spinner, or minnow-shaped lure with a slow, deliberate retrieve along deeper edges.

01 Where it lives +

Cool, shaded water, deeper edges, and places where cover meets open water. Browns are especially comfortable in low light.

02 When to fish +

First light, last light, and cloudy days. Cooler spring and fall water can bring them closer to shore.

03 What it eats +

Aquatic insects and crustaceans are staples; larger brown trout increasingly prey on small fish.

04 How it behaves +

Often wary and cover-oriented by day, brown trout become more active in dim conditions and can feed after dark.

05 Handle with care +

Use a rubber net when possible, support the fish horizontally, and minimize air exposure before release.
